Popmundo Review

7 04 2010

Intro: Popmundo is a free browser game in which you attempt to become a star in a virtual music buisness, but is it a star of the browser mmo buisness?

Graphics:

Click 'n' Watch

With Browser MMORPG’s such as this, there isn’t very much to say graphics wise. It’s a text based browser game where instead of you interacting with NPC’s in a 3D environment, you click on a place and you go there. So the graphics are basically a web-page, with some nice art.

Sound: You probably wouldn’t be surprised to know, due to the style of the game, that there is no sound, just the sound of clicking. I don’t blame the company who made the game though, making a random music generator for an MMO like this would probably be quite hard to do.

Gameplay:

Gameplay in this game is the same as any other Browser MMORPG, you click on something, occasionally type something in, and the computer does the rest. The game starts with you designing your ‘star’, giving him/her their hair, eyes, nose, mouth etc. Then you have to do some quite frankly redundant tasks for your mother who won’t shut the hell up.

But mummy, I want to play outside!

You don’t have to do them though, you can simply click ignore (which is convenient), though it is reccomended that you do them to learn about the game.
Then there is the song making part (which has to come at some point, right?), there is one downside though… you don’t really write that much of the song, you have to type the name of the song in (so at least you get some control over it) the instruments, tempo etc. and it does it for you!

Cheesy song names are awesome, /b/rother!

You can do a lot of other things too, these include:

  • Go on a tour
  • Compose an album
  • Explore town
  • (For a small subscription fee) Set up a buisness, such as a recording studio, park, restaraunt etc.
  • Get married & have children
  • Even get plastic surgery!

Conclusion: Though Popmundo may not be the most interactive browser MMO out there, it has a certain appeal to it, and though it has an irritating tutorial, the rest of the game can be quite unique and fun, due to the large amount of things you can do.

Planet 51 Online Beta Review

1 12 2009

Intro: Hey guys! I’m back with a bang! And this is my new review of Planet 51 Online. This will be a very short review, due to the fact that the game kept crashing.

Graphics: :(The graphics in the screenshot may look good, but seriously, they aren’t. Everything in this game was so ugly, I could stand it. But it is for kids, so they may like it.

Sound: At the game menu, there is no music, which is a bit of a shame really. But luckily when you get ingame there is some music, and for what it is, it isn’t bad, sadly not to my taste though. It sounds alien, though I suppose its meant to.

Gameplay: Okay… lets start with character creation, oh yes, there is none. Really, you log in, and this game dumps you into the world with a randomly generated character and virtually no tutorial. I tried out some minigames and they are some fun, but I couldn’t find any of the so called ‘tasks’ anywhere.

Overall: Overall, Planet 51 Online is an obvious marketing scheme for the movie, which got low reviews as it is (http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/planet_51/). It’s also a failed attempt at that. So if you want a child friendly game, which gives you almost nothing to do, go ahead.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited Review

26 10 2009

Intro: Dungeons and Dragons Online (or DDO) was originally released as a “Pay to Play” MMORPG, to be honest I never heard about it until recently when it turned Free 2 Play! This game is very good, and unique. Oh yeah, this time I’m using my own screenshots!

Graphics:

On low settings :(

On low settings :(

The graphics on this game are good, and I mean good, seriously, there are extremely detailed models in this game, they’re excellent, they can make it lag a bit though.

Sound/Music: The music for this game is good, its kind of what you’d expect from Lord of the Rings or D&D, a bit cliche, but good nonetheless. The great thing about this game is that almost all the characters have their own voice! Seriously, you talk to them and so do they! Its excellent. When you go into instances, there is a ‘Dungeon Master’ narrating a little bit, its really cool.

Gameplay: The gameplay, the best part of this. The game starts with character creation, where you can choose a type of gameplay (Melee, Magic or Specialized), a path for these, a class, a race, then a name (Which is first and last). You can’t make any attractive characters though.

You want my character ladies? No... neither would I.

You want my character ladies? No... neither would I.

You start the game with a short, instanced tutorial, where you go into a cave and battle some evil creatures, pretty normal, pretty easy. Then when you’re done you go to a town and do different quests, which all have their own little instance might I add, you can even solve puzzles in some.

Ever played "Connect the Pipes"? Well, this puzzle is the same.

Ever played "Connect the Pipes"? Well, this puzzle is the same.

You have to defeat different things, like in one you defeat a frog monster and smash a coffin in, a little random but still fun. The leveling system is a very unique one, due to the small level limit of 20. Every time you level up you gain a ‘level rank’, I believe there are 5 of them for each level, so after “Level 1 – Rank 5″ you become “Level 2 – Rank 1″ and so on, it works well and puts a lot more length into the game.

Overall: This is one of the gems of F2P MMO Gaming, its pretty much a must try MMO, and if you really love it, you can pay an optional subscription fee.

Freaky Creatures Review

18 10 2009

Intro: Freaky Creatures is one of those games where you play it for about 10 minutes, then un-install it, theres nothing here to please people, read on.

Freaky Creatures is a game made by Abandon Interactive, I assume its their first project, due to the fact that I’d never heard anything about them before this. Its sort of like Spore Hero, you make a unique ‘Freaky Creature’ then battle it out to the death, there is also a PvE aspect coming.

Graphics:The graphics are a very strong point for this game, seriously, I’m as surprised as you are. But there is one problem, they are too good, because there is a LOT of lag, and I don’t think its down to servers, because not many people play this game.

Get freaky, get freaky, everyone in the house get freaky

Get freaky, get freaky, everyone in the house get freaky

Sound/Music: Another dissapointing part, there is barely any sound apart from the occasional “RAWR” when your creature gets hit.

Gameplay: Hooray, we get to the part where I have to constantly swear about how terrible this game is… okay, I won’t swear, but its still terrible. Freaky Creatures is (currently) a PvP game, where you make your creature and beat the cr*p out of other creatures, simple. But the game’s combat is dissapointing, you’d expect it to be like Mortal Kombat or Tekken… but its like Pokemon… and not a very good adaptation of the combat system either. You click on what body part you would like to hurt, and it does it, you either hit or miss, which gets unbelievably tedious and annoying, if you remember Pokemon, it let you have different abilities, and it was fun. Your creature can also have a ‘lair’, which is, well… a lair. Nothing exciting about customizing them, apart from the odd competition where you win for the best lair… it at least gives you something to do…

Overall: I wouldn’t reccomend this game… seriously. It’s meant to be ‘Child Friendly’, so if you want your child repeatedly smashing their head on the keyboard due to boredom, feel free to get them this. Oh yes, there is also an optional subscription fee, which I can’t imagine anyone paying for.
1/5

EDIT: I forgot to mention the system of USB Action Figures, you plug them in and it adds things to your account, pretty cool.
I heard the PvE came out, I may do a re-review soon.
